This volume commemorates the re-opening of Dom Museum Wien and presents fascinating items from the collections, as well as an account of the architectural re-design of the building, with text and images. Well-known authors analyze selected historic exhibits from the Middle Ages and the Baroque period, elaborating new perspectives.
Similarly, the essays on the legendary art patron Otto Mauer open up a new understanding of his activities supporting post-war avant-garde artists. Another part of the publication covers the architectural challenges of creating a contemporary museum within a historic context. The multifaceted volume closes with dialogues amongst the most important mediators between art and the church.

Throughout many eras, the wound has been a focus of artistic expression committed to existential concerns. The exhibition focuses on artistic representations of wounds against the backdrop of a Christian pictorial tradition. The works shown span the Middle Ages to modern and contemporary art.

The objects in the exhibition are culled from international loans and from the museum’s own diverse holdings, which include the historic objects from St. Stephen’s Cathedral to the Otto Mauer Contemporary Collection. The richly illustrated catalogue covers the six thematic segments of the show, and includes exhibition views as well as in-depth essays.

When does an image become an image, and a text a text? What do these two media have in common, and what separates them? What functions do words and images in cultural history, where central questions dealing with art, religion and society are concerned?

The catalogue documenting the first special exhibition in the newly reopened Dom Museum Wien covers the relationship of words and images in 5 thematic segments.

Exhibition views document the  fascinating dialogue between loans from international museums and collections, avant-garde objects from the Otto Mauer Collection, works by recent Otto-Mauer-Prize winners, as well as recent acquisitions, endowments and artistic interventions.
